Intimacy After a Baby

Intimacy After a Baby

An honest guide to finding your groove again as a new mom. Navigating hormones, healing, and lack of sleep.

Navigating the Fourth Trimester

Becoming a mother is a physical and emotional earthquake. It’s okay if sex is the last thing on your mind for a while.

The Science of Low Desire

  • Prolactin: If you are breastfeeding, your body produces Prolactin, which can naturally lower your desire (it’s nature’s way of saying "focus on the baby").
  • Estrogen Drop: Post-birth, your estrogen levels are very low, which can cause dryness.

The "Touched Out" Feeling

Spending all day holding and feeding a baby can leave you feeling "touched out." You might just want your body to belong to you for a few hours.

Small Steps Back

  1. Redefine Intimacy: It doesn't have to be "all the way." Kissing, hand-holding, and naps together count.
  2. Use Lube: Even if you didn't need it before, your postpartum body likely does.
  3. Communication: Remind your partner that you still love them, but your body is currently a "construction zone" that is still healing.
